What is the primary mission of the organization, and how has it evolved over time? NYJTL's primary mission is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The organization has expanded its scope from solely providing free tennis programs to offering a comprehensive approach that includes afterschool programs, academic support, social-emotional learning, and life skills development. This evolution reflects NYJTL’s commitment to fostering both athletic and personal growth for children in underserved communities.

 

What qualities does the organization value most in its volunteers, and how does it inspire a shared commitment to its mission? NYJTL deeply values dedication, empathy, and a passion for tennis and youth development in its volunteers. Volunteers are motivated by the opportunity to witness the transformative impact of their efforts, as they see firsthand how tennis can empower and uplift underserved youth. NYJTL cultivates a strong sense of community among its volunteers by highlighting the meaningful outcomes of their contributions and celebrating their achievements.

 

 

What unique experiences or skills do volunteers gain through working with your organization? Volunteers at NYJTL gain valuable skills such as mentoring, leadership, and teaching. They also develop a deeper understanding of community needs and the power of sports and education to create opportunities for young people. Additionally, volunteers experience the fulfillment of directly contributing to the personal and academic growth of the children they support.

 

What are some recent achievements or successful aspects that you’re particularly proud of? NYJTL is proud to have reached an incredible milestone, impacting 90,000 children across all five boroughs of New York City. The organization also takes great pride in its flagship facility, the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning, which provides world-class tennis facilities and academic programs, empowering underserved youth to reach their full potential. Additionally, NYJTL celebrates the growth of its Scholar Athlete Program, which continues to open doors for students by helping them secure college scholarships and achieve academic success.

 

What is your favorite part about working with NYJTL? The most rewarding part of working with NYJTL is witnessing the transformation in young people as they build confidence, skills, and a sense of belonging through tennis and education. Seeing students achieve milestones, such as earning college scholarships or competing in tennis tournaments, is incredibly fulfilling.

 

How would you describe the environment at NYJTL? The environment at NYJTL is inclusive, dynamic, and mission-driven. It’s a place where everyone is united by the shared goal of empowering young people. The team is collaborative and supportive, fostering creativity and a deep commitment to making a difference in the community. Whether on the tennis courts or in the classrooms, there’s a vibrant energy that reflects the passion of everyone involved.
