What is the primary mission of the organization, and how has it evolved over time? Our mission is to provide therapeutic experiences with horses to facilitate personal development for New Yorkers with disabilities and others who benefit from our life-changing programs.

What qualities does the organization value most in its volunteers, and how does it inspire a shared commitment to its mission? The qualities we value most in volunteers is a willingness to learn, enthusiasm when it comes to engaging with our therapeutic riders, as well as volunteers who are reliable and show up to the shifts they commit to. We rely heavily on volunteers when it comes to our participants being able to ride safely. Without volunteers, we are not able to provide this service. It's with the support of our volunteers that we're able to provide the necessary therapeutic experiences we promise our participants.

What unique experiences or skills do volunteers gain through working with your organization? Our volunteers get the chance to work in an environment that is hard to come by in NYC. In addition to being able to spend time with animals, we also do our best to teach our volunteers horsemanship (meaning they learn best practices for working with and communicating with horses.) They also get the chance to learn (and see firsthand) the benefits that equine therapy has on our riders, volunteers, and staff.

What is your favorite part about working with GallopNYC? I love being around and working with our horses. I also enjoy working with our volunteers and it's also very satisfying to see the improvements our riders make from week to week in their lessons.

How would you describe the environment at GallopNYC? The environment is unlike any other you'll find in the city. In addition to it being outdoors (make sure to bundle in the winter when you come to volunteer!) on a property that has horses, chickens, dogs, ducks, and cats, there's also definitely a strong sense of community. We have a small friendly staff and many volunteers who come regularly and develop relationships with riders, staff, and other volunteers!
