How would you describe the environment at KEEN?
1. What is the primary mission of the organization, and how has it evolved over time?
KEEN New York’s primary mission is to provide free sports and wellness for youth with disabilities, fostering confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of community. Over time, KEEN has evolved to meet the changing needs of its athletes and families, expanding its offerings beyond sports to include yoga, art, and storytelling, and now exploring programming for older athletes to ensure lifelong engagement.
2. What qualities does the organization value most in its volunteers, and how does it inspire a shared commitment to its mission?
KEEN values volunteers who are patient, enthusiastic, and adaptable, as they are paired one-on-one with athletes who have diverse needs. The organization fosters a shared commitment to its mission by creating a welcoming, inclusive space where volunteers see firsthand the impact of their time—whether it’s an athlete’s first basketball shot or the joy of simply being accepted as they are. KEEN also emphasizes community-building, offering ongoing training and events to keep volunteers engaged.
3. What unique experiences or skills do volunteers gain through working with your organization?
Volunteers gain valuable experiences in disability inclusion, communication, and adaptability. Many develop leadership and teamwork skills while learning how to support individuals with varying abilities. KEEN provides a rare opportunity to make a direct, meaningful impact, fostering personal growth and a deeper understanding of the disability community.
4. What are some recent achievements or successful aspects that you’re particularly proud of?
Some recent achievements include expanding KEEN’s soccer program to be a year-round, indoor offering, providing athletes with more consistent opportunities to play and develop their skills. KEEN’s participation in major events, like the NYC Marathon, has also boosted visibility and fundraising efforts. Additionally, KEEN athletes and volunteers continue to form lasting friendships, which is a success in itself.
5. What is your favorite part about working with KEEN?
My favorite part of working with KEEN is witnessing the pure joy and confidence that athletes gain through the programs. Whether it’s a first-time volunteer connecting with an athlete or a longtime participant finding their voice, every session feels like a celebration of ability and community.
6. How would you describe the environment at KEEN?
KEEN’s environment is welcoming and supportive—a place where everyone is encouraged to be themselves. The energy is contagious, with volunteers cheering on athletes and athletes supporting each other. It’s a space that embraces all abilities, fostering meaningful connections.
