First Tee

First Tee is an international youth development organization focused on introducing the game of golf and its inherent values, especially to the minority and underprivileged youth who have traditionally been denied access to the game. Through after-school and in-school programs, First Tee helps to build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices. First Tee chapters are based in the most in-need communities in New York City, The Bronx, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Westchester County, Essex County, NJ, Plainfield, NJ, and multiple affiliate campuses.  https://firstteemetny.org/nyc/

Volunteering

There are many volunteering opportunities beyond golfing, including fundraising/events, operations/administration, mentoring/tutoring, and in-school program support. I was once an athlete for First Tee and can attest to the positive atmosphere created by the volunteers and coaches. First Tee made golf fun by allowing me to meet and connect with other young golfers.

Here are requirements of junior volunteers under the age of 18: Current or past member of high school golf team Availability: i) Spring - 9 week Session 6 of 9 Sundays (typically mid April to mid June) or ii) Summer - 6 week Session -4 of 6 Mondays or Thursdays or Fridays (July/August) or iii) Fall - 7 week session -5 of 7 Saturdays or Sundays (mid -Sept to Early Nov) Completion of 1 hour Junior eLearning (on-line) course which gives a brief overview of First Tee’s positive youth development model, Coach Building Blocks, and information for juniors interested in assisting First Tee Coaches with the delivery of First Tee Programs at their chapter.

All juniors who meet the above prerequisites should complete the following form: https://firstteemetny.org/coach-volunteer/
